Davies Dismissed from BYU Ball

Brandon Davies, a basketball player at Brigham Young University (BYU) has recently been suspended from the team for pre-marital sex (which is against the BYU honor code) with his girlfriend. The honor code, which stems from the code of conduct of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is displayed here.

• Be honest
• Live a chaste and virtuous life
• Obey the law and all campus policies
• Use clean language
• Respect others
• Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee and substance abuse
• Participate regularly in church services
• Observe the Dress and Grooming Standards
• Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code

Since I consumed an immense amount of coffee and tea in college, have a goatee, wore sweat-pants to class, and occasionally partook in an alcoholic beverage at the local speakeasy, there is obviously no way I would have been able to survive at BYU. For the students that attend classes there however, they are required to follow those guidelines and should be disciplined for inappropriate conduct, even if it is for having a tall-no-foam-carmel-latte in the morning. In an age where it is not uncommon for universities to brush things under the rug to keep star athletes eligible, it is refreshing to see a school remain constant with their punishments toward students regardless of their standing on campus.
